Tall Women More Affected by Cancer Risk - The study showed correlation between height and cancer. People who have more height, has the potential of contracting cancer. Whether it's cancer in general, or deadly.
According to the Oxford University study, women's risk of contracting cancer was increased 16 percent for a height of 10 centimeter increments. Of the women who have a height of 5 feet 9 inches (or about 174 centimeters), recorded more than 33 percent of cancer than those who only has about 5 feet (or about 152 centimeters).
Existing research in The Lancet Oncology showed, at least tall women have a greater risk of suffering one of the 10 types of cancer. Among others, breast cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, kidney cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and leukemia.
The study, led by Dr. Jane Green found that each increment of 4 inches (or about 10.16 centimeters) the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer increased 17 percent. As for cervical cancer by 19 percent.
Up to now unknown reason certain height relationship with cancer. The researchers suspect one reason was tall women tend to start puberty earlier, and their bodies begin to produce large amounts of the hormone estrogen. This hormone is known to trigger tumor growth.
In addition, the researchers also suspect tall people have more cells in their bodies. This allows one to have a higher chance to become cancerous.
"Of course people can not change their height. And being higher can reduce their risk of something else, like heart disease," said Jane Green.
While the Director of Health Information from Cancer Research UK (Cancer Research UK), Sara Hiom, said the tall woman does not need to worry with this research.
"Many people have not had a high above average, and higher they only have a small impact on cancer risk," said Sara Hiom. "This study shows a high relationship and cancer, which could pave the way other studies to help us understand this," he continued.
