Russia may lose 30% of permafrost by 2050 - Russia's vast permafrost regions may shrink by a third by the middle of the century because of global warming, threats to infrastructure in the Arctic zone, said an official from the emergencies ministry Friday.

"May shrink over the next 25 to 30 years in the area of ​​permafrost in Russia 10 to 18 percent," the head of the Ministry's civil protection department said Andrei Boloven the RIA Novosti news agency.

"Up to the middle of the century, it can shrink by 15-30 percent, and the limit of permafrost in the north-east shift of 150-200 kilometers," he said.
