Catherine Review for the Xbox360

Catherine Review for the Xbox360
Catherine Review for the Xbox360 - "You think if Catherine lives, you will not wake up in the dark ever again to that awful screaming of the lambs." ~ Hannibal Lecter

Fortunately, I've played Catherine in reading the contemporary novel A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe, winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for literature. The comparison between the book and the video game is uncanny: both frustrated, weak-willed male protagonists are now stalled in a flat relation, which is confronted by the immediacy of pregnancy and the presence of another woman. Their lack of trust and commitment, she performs a wobbly path of deception that only escalates the situation, until they finally discover the determination to make a decision. Sure, Catherine is a video game about raging hard block puzzles, but his conscious blend of history and the gameplay is powerful, seductive, and ultimately satisfying.

Vincent Brooks is the prototype of man on the threshold of middle age life, a slouchy manchild who through his twenties, without much concern and breezed lives in a cramped, single, unnamed apartment. On the white, black and pink saccharine title screen it, horned sheep and half-naked, bound by barbed wire to probation dice, apparently called his girlfriend Katherine, 32, sits impassively on the side of the head. Sits on top of the chain-link menu, but is the sudden seductress Catherine, 22, blonde, bubbly, and blessed demonic: turn the same pronunciation with a candy. Said Vincent is forced into a love triangle between marriage and sexual lust, the gate-closing sound of a giant pendulum with the astrological symbol of Venus and Mars, the incessant ticking of the biological clock decorated.

The game has started quoting Shakespeare: "The whole world's a stage and all the men and women is merely players.". But as the game suggests, it's just the men. Vincent's daily rest time soon haunted by nightmares where he and other men, the sheep seem like a huge wall cube has to climb before he collapses in front of them. Chased by time and huge bosses in the form of their darkest fears, they rise each cubic level, the ringing of a church bell is there for a wedding or a funeral?-In the hope that they do not rush to the next victim of her fate. It is an evil and twisted variation of Intelligent Qube, when a romantic thriller where death traps in a dream means in real life, and where no one remembers their collective nightmare, aside from rumors and dubious of the depths of fatigue were framed.

Puzzles are challenging and notoriously cruel, are also on the Easy difficulty level the player a plethora of repeats observed in almost the sweet joy of the failure of humanity, like the gods in an easy to toast the efforts of Sisyphus. The basic idea is to stairs by pushing and pulling cube so that Vincent bert Q * hops with the panic, the wall and the flight can construct a scale. But to reach the top and bask in the heavenly light that is out of the exit door almost as simple as that: cube can slide on each other to only their edges stack to block enemies and kill players, dice in many variants ( standard before that heavy, immobile, trap, spring, bomb, ice and even black holes), and almost every section of players at least a call back, if not seven techniques. Remember, no hair out, reason.

Some levels may require unfair, especially those with a vindictive boss or quick puzzle, tricky maneuvers. The control can sometimes be sensitive when Vincent must turn over to a specific cube without meaning to, move to the next block, or if he needs to take place to hang along the edge of a block down, move to an adjacent block. It is still fussy, when controls are lifted, while Vincent Wall-hanging around the back of the tower. But these cases are rare, and each level has checkpoints and is beatable with a certain speed, skill and luck.

In the meantime, it is Vincent with his feeling of powerlessness and vulnerability to handle and choose between the freedom of single life and the order of monogamous love (or not). While roaming through the bar, aptly named "Stray Sheep", he can respond to SMS messages in a way that will draw him toward either Katherine or Catherine. The same applies to answering questions from customers, other sheep, or a mysterious figure who speaks through a confessional Vincent and transported from one stage to the next. (Those look to be connected online, pie charts, as other players to answer questions.) As Vincent fluctuated determined, the game is over, of which there are eight, an encouraging number for completion ISTS and masochistic fans of branching storylines.

What block puzzles have to do with romantic relationships, but only for waxing poetic. I think I could make sense to extrapolate how the puzzle is to adolescence stairs or push and pull of love and hate, but it would just be dull straw-grabbing joke about dating with the same desperation of physics. One is with spatial intelligence, the other resolved with emotional intelligence. If there was a clear link between the two, there would be no stereotype for nerds.

To strengthen the relationship meter compound could have a distinctive impact, perhaps with the players will encounter particular items or certain types depending on the cube orientation romantic Vincent. Without a solid connection between story and gameplay are captivating and sinister plot, cel-shaded graphics just window dressing and palette-swapping, as spectacular as they are, for what is essentially a game about blocks.

This difficult to separate segments of the narrative of the puzzles, expanding the already tedious first act that takes place over three quarters of play. Until the climax of the revelation Vincent repeated every day with the same anxious, lackadaisical interest in the player earns contempt and frustration. His pathetic complaints and indecision about his situation is stressful, and it can stifle the first half of the game, make replay.

Fortunately, the mini-game Rapunzel and bonus challenges and competitive modes, albeit redundant, provide a welcome distraction from the main story. Players can also post high scores to levels again and win gold prices, to unlock additional content and earn well-deserved fame.

Catherine should be commended for their courage, not just two untapped genres, mystery and adventure highlight, but also combining them together into what you only as a contemporary video game. Its mature themes, both sexual and religious, never step over the boundaries of bad taste and are treated respectfully and provocative: It's actually matured. For that alone, and paves the way for a new, modern hybrid of video games, Catherine should not be forgotten on the lamen Silence of the Lambs.
