Review: "Another Earth" is a thoughtful sci-fi romance
Can not bear stuffed around by a robot or superhero spectacle or R-rated raunchy comedy sit in this summer? "Another Earth" offers the discerning cinema-goers as a welcome alternative.
The indie drama - winner at this year's Sundance Film Festival - is a sci-fi romance. But it is not a single foreigner in sight. Instead, the film-too-human characters more than a little of their own feelings at times alienated, trying their best to push down and the mask painful emotions.
It therefore, is exactly what the title suggests: a second Earth, with its own moon, suddenly. It depends, shimmering on the horizon visible from our planet day and night and all its tantalizing possibilities.
This other world appears initially in the same night that an intelligent high school senior, Rhoda Williams (played by newcomer Brit Marling, who co-wrote the script with the first-time feature director Mike Cahill) is accepted, always out of MIT to celebrate the way home after a night of playing it a light and slams into a car in the renowned composer John Burroughs (William Mapother), his pregnant wife and young son.
When Rhoda from prison a few years will come later, she seeks out John, the only one in his family survived the accident. She and John are both just shells of their own cut from the rest of the emotional aftermath of the tragedy. Without her true identity, she fits into his life. Slowly, begin to help these two together to return the land of the living.
During the film there is constant talk on radio and television about the earth and the other wants to travel there. Shades of TV's "Fringe": Could it be that everyone on earth has a doppelganger on the second ground, an identical twin, in order that may just be a happier and more successful version? It is a matter of special appeal to both John and Rhoda.
Marling is a rangy blonde with a long face, that this page is just mildly interesting rather than beautiful. There is a subdued intensity of their performance, which is more penetrating effect known for his reticence, especially Rhoda emotional numbness begins to shed.
It is a measure of the "Another Earth" ability, a viewer if you made the film, you find yourself looking up to see control almost hopefully, if a second ground does not seem to move'm done.
