Mozambique held its first batch of biofuel, which exports produced from the jatropha plant for use by the German Lufthansa airliner, a company official told AFP on Friday.

Are non-edible oil from seeds of drought resistant and fast growing plant crushed in the central province of Manica produced by British firm Sun Biofuels, which has sent 30 tons to Germany.

Said "The global market requires large quantities of bio-fuel," the company Director of Corporate Affairs Sergio Gouveia, the news agency AFP.

"Ansa air alone seeks 400 million liters per year of bio-fuel in the world."

He would not reveal how much she was paid for shipping, but said biofuel prices vary from between $ 900 and $ 950 (€ 661) per ton.

Some experts remain skeptical about the viability of biofuels because of a lack of detailed scientific studies on this issue - and the critics object to the practice of growing edible plants in a poor country.

Proponents say the system, jatropha, a poisonous plant can grow almost anywhere and yields high benefits of clean, renewable energy, without the quality of arable land for food production.

Last November, Lufthansa announced that testing would begin to run regular local flights in part on biofuels in 2011.

He said it was aimed at biofuels for between five and 10 percent of all consumer use until 2020.
