Najib says Bersih a bid to topple his government
Najib Razak Datuk Seri today accused the Bersih group tries to use the power through mass demonstrations, while the rejection of the election reform group, the poll fraud allegations.
Speaking on arrival at KLIA after his eight-day trip abroad, the prime minister elections in Malaysia was also kept clean.
"We have never cheated in an election in Malaysia," he said around 200 Barisan Nasional (BN) at Kompleks Bunga Raya supporters in KLIA.
Najib also brushed aside Bersih said that BN had an unfair advantage when it came to gather around campaigns to the ruling coalition stranglehold on the media and the limitations of freedom.
"We say it's fair to say they (Pakatan Rakyat), it is not fair. Is not it fair enough that they campaign every day? Every day a ceramah here and there... That's not fair?" Said he.
Najib added that there needed to be a balance between freedom of expression and public order, but stressed that there is "room for dissent" in Malaysia.
He pointed out that Bersih had the offer of the Government, their rally in a stadium and have rejected claims that this was because the election watchdog was eager to provoke a procession and the police as an indication of their demands.
"It's not so much about the electoral reform. They want to show us as if we are like the spring Arab governments in the Middle East," he said.
"That's why they tried to paint us as an autocratic government... But really they want to take the power that we were elected by the people."
Bersih estimates that 50,000 people showed up on 9 July rally for free and fair elections despite efforts to prevent it from place, while the police have said there are only 6,000.
The protest turned chaotic when police used tear gas and water cannon on thousands of demonstrators in nearly 1,700 arrests, injured scores, and the death of former military Baharuddin Ahmad, 59
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has said it will be a public inquiry into police conduct during the rally following reports that they used excessive force in order to keep protesters apart.
Police yesterday cleared itself of wrongdoing after an internal probe into alleged police brutality, and have instead placed the blame on Bersih demonstrators to provoke the police.
