Indonesian lawmaker attacks Greenpeace

Indonesian lawmaker attacks GreenpeaceIndonesian lawmaker attacks Greenpeace - An Indonesian legislator said on Tuesday Greenpeace would be expelled from the country if an investigation finds the environmental group tried to "ruin our sovereignty."

"We have evidence that Greenpeace has found its own political and economic agenda in Indonesia," said Effendy Choirie, which is based on a parliamentary commission to monitor the security and foreign policy.

"If it ruin clear data, they try to maintain our sovereignty, then the government to expel them or to give sanctions," the legislator said of the Muslim-based National Awakening Party.

The party is a member of the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono government coalition. There was no official government response to the allegations.

Choirie refused to elaborate on alleged misconduct by Greenpeace, except to say that the international non-governmental agency was biased against certain unnamed companies.

"We have a plan to invite Greenpeace to a hearing. We will be asking the government to find the data about their misdeeds," he said.

Greenpeace has aggressively against powerful palm oil and paper companies, which are often used for rapid destruction of Indonesian forests and accused of fighting threatens endangered species like orangutans and tigers.

The organization released a video this week shows a rare Sumatran tigers die in a trap, where, what they said was a forest concession Asia Pulp and Paper, a Singapore-based paper and packaging giant industrial estate.

Greenpeace Representation Only Hidayati Choirie rejected accusations.

"It is a fact that seems to have been forgotten, is that Greenpeace is not only in Indonesia. We are present in more than 40 countries, most of them in developed countries," she said in a statement.

"Greenpeace is not ready and never want to accept funding from governments, government agencies or companies."

Indonesia is considered the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, mainly through deforestation for the timber industry and pave the way for plantations to create.
